Dear Editor,
Regarding Michael King's "
Point Austin: August Horribilis" [News, Aug. 15]: I realize that there were so many horrible things to include that you couldn't spend much time on any of them. But the one line you devoted to "crocodile tears" being shed over Israel's "slaughter of Palestinian civilians" using American-sent weapons is itself a horrible distortion. The Iranians who supplied Hamas with money and rockets aren't even civilized enough to shed crocodile tears. The Hamas leaders who launched almost as many rockets indiscriminately into Israel only shed tears that that they didn't kill more Israelis. Yes, Israel spends its (and donor) money on housing – including illegal settlements. But it actually devotes a lot of its construction money to building shelters for its civilians instead of subway-quality tunnels under their houses, schools, hospitals, and sanctuaries for storing weapons. The only help for the civilians in Gaza is to find a way out from under the corrupt tyrannical Hamas government that has never allowed free elections since it came to power.
