Dear Editor,
Jack Swingler's letter is so riddled with thoughtless remarks, it seems obvious he knows little about U.S. history and foreign affairs [“
Agree With Hamilton,” Postmarks, July 11]. This mass exodus from Central America is the result of past U.S. intervention, which created armed right-wing death squads and bloody dictatorships. Since the U.S. government is largely responsible for this humanitarian crisis, it has the moral obligation to help these refugees. As far as the unemployment and economic crisis issues are concerned, we should blame the greedy corporations that moved overseas to exploit other people and to get out of paying trillions of dollars in federal taxes. The U.S. has spent trillions on its illegal wars and has given the brutal Israeli regime $250 billion in aid to terrorize and kill Palestinians. Also, Jack must not know that U.S.’s NAFTA policy has destroyed small farms and businesses in Mexico, which forced desperate people to head north in search of work. It is the U.S.’s powerful, wealthy elites who have kept other countries and peoples “under siege.”
