Corporate Rock Policy Still Sucks

RECEIVED Tue., May 1, 2012

Dear Chronicle,
The other evening as I finished a gig on Sixth Street, I stopped by the Driskill to catch two of my favorite cats, Floyd Domino and Redd Volkaert. As always, these cats were cookin'. After a couple of songs, I asked if I could sit in on snare drum. Sure, they said. Quickly I returned, snare drum in hand, set up, and started to play. After a song, the manager told us the Driskill had a corporate no-drums policy. Floyd talked fast and smooth, and the manager relented. We started playing, and all of a sudden the bar was packed.
Now, I'd like to think it was my snare and brushwork that brought them in. Maybe it was just the late Friday night slam. Or maybe it was three old friends jamming, having a great time entertaining the people who come to Austin just to see that kind of thing. Did corporate ever think of that?
I'm just sayin',
