Happy Trails, Motor

RECEIVED Wed., Sept. 14, 2011

Dear Editor,
We were very saddened to hear this week of the passing of our good friend, “Motorcycle” Michael Sommers. Known as “Motor” to his close friends, he was a world traveler, had a kind heart, and was the sort of magical spirit for whom everything in life seemed to fall into place, regardless of the situation. If he was traveling through the remote desert and his motorcycle broke down (true story), within minutes a total stranger would appear, load his bike onto his trailer, and take him to the resident BMW specialist that happened to reside out in the middle of nowhere. After an enjoyable evening of good company, stories of amazing experiences and many laughs, he would then be on his way to his next adventure, leaving a global trail of random individuals fortunate enough to have known him and called him their friend.
Having worked for so many years with The Austin Chronicle, Kerrville Folk Festival, and many other special events in Austin, he touched the lives of so many people and lived a truly wonderful life. Regardless of hardships, he was always the same ol’ Motor – a gentle giant that was always laughing and providing a positive experience to those around him.
Losing Motor is a real loss for those who cared for him, and we will always cherish our friendship and time we were fortunate enough to share with him.
Happy trails, Motor. We will miss you dearly.
