Dear Editor, If you are retired, planning to retire, have retired family members, or are in any case receiving Social Security, be advised: you are on welfare! Despite the fact that Social Security recipients have paid into the system for their entire working lives, the Republican Party has christened them nonproductive welfare recipients. Not to worry though, the Republicans have a plan to “privatize” Social Security by turning it over to Wall Street, the same people who wiped out 40% to 60% of people’s investments in 2008. The Republican-hatched Tea Party, whose members appear to be overweight, gray-haired retirees themselves, seem to vociferously agree that their own Social Security benefits be handed over to Wall Street hedge funds. Do they know something we don’t? Also, George W. Bush, our greatest Republican president, recently indicated that he had only one regret: no, not his $1.7 trillion illegal Iraq war; and no, not deregulating us into a second Great Depression; but simply, that he had not been able to “privatize” (aka, abolish) Social Security. Retirees may have to busy themselves reserving a place under the nearest freeway bridge.
