Give Urban Talent Its Due

RECEIVED Wed., Sept. 1, 2010

Dear Editor,
The review for the play B-boy bluez [Arts Review, Aug. 27] is accompanied by a photograph of Zell Miller III, the auteur, in front of a piece of local graffiti art. It's a beautiful piece, an excellent choice for the article. The artist who created the piece is unmentioned. The graffiti pieces that shined so expressively in the production of B-boy were mentioned explicitly in the review of the play, again with no mention of the artist. The same local talent created both the piece in the photo and on the set – Nathan Nordstrom, aka Sloke. I have seen Sloke's pieces used as the background in numerous photos appearing in The Austin Chronicle but have yet to see his name mentioned. Please, give credit to the fantastic urban talent we have in our community. The contribution they make is precious, as the message of B-boy espouses. Please don't deny them proper respect. Give credit where credit is due.

[Editor's note: The photograph in question was provided by the Vortex Repetory Company without an attribution for the mural artist. That may have also happened with other photographs the Chronicle has published that included Nordstrom's artwork. We regret the omission, inadvertent though it was. The paper has, however, mentioned Nordstrom on several occasions, with regard to his own graffiti work and exhibitions that he has curated.]
