Bottled Water Is a Scam

RECEIVED Fri., July 30, 2010

Dear Chronicle,
So now we have bottled water shaped like the UT Tower. Are people still not getting the message? Bottled water is a scam. As much as 40% of it, including Dasani and Aquafina, is tap water. Yet bottled water costs hundreds of times more. The plastic leaches into the environment, and those little indestructible plastic molecules are a prime suspect in causing birth defects and sterility in amphibians. Hmm, I wonder what they're doing to us?
Then there's the huge waste of gas involved in transporting all those bottles, and the fact that tap water is much more regulated and quality inspected than bottled water. Also, Austin is in the Top 10 for American cities with the best water. There are studies here and in Europe that show bottled water has significantly higher levels of bacteria than tap water. The list goes on and on.
Bottled water is not a healthy choice. It's a lifestyle choice, and a bad one.
Sincerely,
Chris Jones
