TCAD Deliberately Overvaluing Property

RECEIVED Mon., July 27, 2009

Dear Editor,
One thing I think Amy Smith could have mentioned is that the Travis Central Appraisal District is in many cases overvaluing residential properties [“No Fair Share? Property Tax Report Provokes a County Review,” News, July 17]. I know this for a fact. I have a formal protest hearing in August. I have run several comparative market analyses for my neighborhood, and the values have definitely declined. Yet TCAD has increased the property-tax value based on comparisons from February 2008! I am angry and feel helpless against the bureaucracy. Who oversees TCAD? As a Realtor I have seen this in other neighborhoods, and now it’s come home at the time when I can least afford it. It seems like Travis County wants to own my home; I can’t afford the taxes!
