Humane Education = No Kill

RECEIVED Sat., April 4, 2009

Dear Editor,
We will have fewer dogs and cats killed at the shelter when we and Town Lake Animal Center make humane education the No. 1 priority [“How Many Cats Did Austin Save Last Year?” News, April 3]. Education that says a pet is a lifetime commitment, not to be rid of when one moves to a place that doesn't take dogs or cats, when one's dog jumps or gets on the furniture, etc. Education that calls for not just low-cost spay and neuter programs but mandatory spay and neuter. Education that gives a paws up to adopting from the shelter and paws down to buying a dog from a breeder or a store like Petland. Dorinda Pulliam failed to educate humanely when she chose to set up a cat adoption at Petland. Sure, Pulliam thought working with Petland would help the shelter cats find a home, but working with Petland rather than working to close them down simply means more dead dogs and cats at TLAC, thus not the "no-kill city" Austin wants to, and most definitely should, be.
