The Truth Shall Set Some Free

RECEIVED Sun., Sept. 7, 2008

Dear Editor,
Mr. Lea, why does one expressing an opinion equate to one who would "wish to stifle speech and thought” [Postmarks, Sept. 5]? Freedom of speech is every man's (and woman's) God-given right, and if the Chronicle journals a piece without reporting all the facts, the knowledgeable reader can and should report those omissions. As far as the circus goes, it is a fact that animals are torn from their families in the wild. It is a fact that they are verbally and physically assaulted into submission to perform unnatural acts. It is a fact that circus animals are chained the majority of the time, leading to painful foot ailments and a half-life-span demise. Now, whether one chooses to attend the circus or not once presented with those facts is his or her choice. But expressing such truth is what will set one free. Too bad the money-grubbing circus denies such freedom to its captivating yet captive animals.
