Austin's Finest in Action

RECEIVED Tue., Aug. 26, 2008

Dear Editor,
This morning in front of Club de Ville, I had the opportunity to witness one of Austin's finest in action! I was checking to see if there were any crackheads still on the property and whether or not any crackheads had attempted to break in or vandalize something. This is common here at the Club de Ville, and I hear from other business owners/managers in the area that we are not alone. Two days ago, I found the lock on the walk-in forced and several cases of beer missing. Due to these frequent invasions, I was glad to see a cruiser stopped, lights flashing, out front. Perhaps one of the many offenders I see daily buying or selling drugs, passing out, fighting, screaming, panhandling, or digging through the Dumpster for cans while the "undesirable" trash finds the street was being brought to justice!
The officer had pulled over a thirtysomething bicycle commuter. The officer went to his car. She told me that turning onto Red River from 12th heading south, she had cut too much into the far lane – a gross violation of all human law! Another patrol car arrived. My property-tax bill groaned. The second officer once responded to a break-in call at the club. I remembered him because he responded immediately – it usually takes an hour or three for response to such a call (in my experience). He came to the door, sidearm drawn. I came out with my hands up, identifying myself. He cursed dispatch – having reported the call "in progress." He asked if I wanted to file a report. I replied, "of course," to which he seemed slightly annoyed. Anyway, the second officer left while the first was handing this bicycle fiend the ticket.
I looked again, but she had ridden away, no doubt reprimanding herself for being such a miscreant and vowing to change her life so as not to detract from the quality of life in our fair, "fit" city. I really get a feeling now why our police force is the highest paid in the state. It’s the crime!
