Go to Xeriscape

RECEIVED Fri., Aug. 22, 2008

Dear Editor,
Enjoyed Daniel Mottola's article on xeriscaping [“Keeping Off the Grass,” News, Aug. 22]. We took out all of our carpet grass plus all the non-native shrubs and went to full xeriscape. An additional benefit not mentioned in Dan's article is the hours of joy which our new native landscape has given us. We put in dozens of plants and shrubs which attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Now all around our house we have a constant parade of multicolored visitors which are a delight to watch. In addition, we have even more birds than in the past coming to our feeder, a veritable flying circus all day long. Sure, going to full xeriscape brings an upfront cost, but we wish we had done it years ago. City Council: Get with the program. 1) Offer incentives to replace grass with xeriscape, and 2) require xeriscape for all new construction in Austin. If you want the most interesting and beautiful lot in the neighborhood, go to xeriscape!
