Owners of Dogs Must Accept Some Responsibility

RECEIVED Tue., July 8, 2008

Dear Editor,
As a dog lover, I feel for the owners of Butter and Champ for the loss of their pets [“Dead Dogs Don't Lie,” News, July 4]. I'm not sure the cops who shot the potentially dangerous animals acted inappropriately. Tough call, especially without witnessing the events. Regardless, blame for those dogs' death rests with the owners: Their animals escaped through holes in their fences! Utterly irresponsible. Ditto for those whom I saw with dogs at the fireworks display Downtown. Yes, different dogs have different degrees of tolerance, but in general, subjecting a dog to a barrage of explosions in a crowded, unfamiliar place is not only foolish but cruel.
