Dear
Chron,
Please spare me the crybaby stories about the goddamn pit bull owners whose goddamn pit bulls escape through holes in their fences and are shot by cops while they’re attacking other dogs [“
Dead Dogs Don't Lie,” News, July 4]. Hooray for the cops who shot these goddamn dogs and may their aim be as good in the future.
Incredibly, the author of your story claims these poor pit bull owners had “done everything right.” Oh yeah? Well what about the goddamn holes in their goddamn fences?
My girlfriend had a sweet old dog that was killed in her yard by a neighbor’s pit bull that had escaped its yard. If only an officer had been on hand to shoot that one, then my girlfriend wouldn’t have almost lost a finger trying to pull the goddamn thing off her dog. Her dog is dead and she truly had “done everything right.”
I tried to get the city of Austin and Travis County to tighten up laws on pit bull owners – things like licenses, proof of liability insurance, and, yes, good fences. But the city and county have their hands tied by Texas state law Section 822.047, which prohibits laws specific to a breed. I'm now trying to get that law changed. If ever there was a breed that needed tighter laws specifically for their owners, it's got to be pit bulls. But, for now, any change to the law must apply equally to toy dachshunds. Until then, I guess the cops will just have to keep shooting them.
Goddamnit.
