Dear Editor,
I was pleased to see the
Chronicle endorse Proposition 4, which includes critical funding for our state parks ["
'Austin Chronicle' Endorsements," News, Oct. 19]. In Central Texas we are lucky enough to have some amazing state parks just a short drive away. Unfortunately, for years they have suffered from budget shortfalls that caused park ranger layoffs, reduced access, and dilapidated facilities. Last session the Legislature tripled funding for our parks, but part of that money needs to be approved by voters. These funds will provide essential resources to some of our favorites like Bastrop State Park, Inks Lake, and Enchanted Rock. Texas deserves a world-class parks system. For this to happen, we need the state to provide permanent funding for our state parks and to initiate a major land acquisition program so we can have more open spaces to enjoy. We will never get that far if we don’t first approve funding for repairs and maintenance. If you are looking for an excuse to vote in this off-year, check your vote “yes” for our state parks and Proposition 4.
