Ice House Needs Shade

RECEIVED Fri., April 13, 2007

Dear Editor,
Let me start by saying I love Amy's Ice Creams, both for the great desserts as well as for it being a great local business that is a huge asset to the Austin area. However, the new Amy's & Phil's Ice House is an interesting development. I have to wonder why there aren't really any trees or shade provided for the outdoor play area. In an age when concern for the environment and the health of our newest generations is a concern, it seems to me that the project overlooked the intense Texas heat. (Perhaps relying on ice cream to cool us down?) This is a concern in terms of heat-caused illnesses, cancers caused by too much sun exposure, and urban heat island effects created by too much nonvegetal ground surface. Oh how I wish there were at least one beautiful oak tree on the corner.
