Shame on You, Hyde Park Baptist Church

RECEIVED Mon., Nov. 27, 2006

Dear Editor,
Kudos to you, Emily Pyle and to The Austin Chronicle. I have been an avid reader of your publication for the past 18 years and have always found it to be one of the most honest and poignant delivery systems of local and national news. "When the Bough Breaks," in your Nov. 17 issue [News], hit particularly close to home for me, not only as a mother of young children, but also as a new director of a child development center. I had chills reading this story and couldn't believe the attempted cover-up and passé attitude of the three directors of Hyde Park Baptist Church. I also found the Department of Family and Protective Services' investigation quite unbelievable. I have been submitted to many reviews by this particular department, and you wouldn't believe the attitude that I have encountered regarding something as simple as a bleach solution! In my short stint as a preschool director, (less than 24 months with summers off!) I have seen five different licensing representatives come through my child development center. I wonder if the high turn-over rate isn't something to be concerned about. I know they are in place to protect our children, and rightly so, but I get the feeling that this isn't going to happen in this situation. I am applauding Tara Turner for not letting the big guys get away with alleged inappropriate and indirect child abuse. Shame on you, Hyde Park Baptist Church!
