Take a Stand on Grievances

RECEIVED Tue., June 20, 2006

To the Editor,
Texas school district employees who have a legitimate grievance against a campus administrator can be forced to file their grievance with the same administrator who is the subject of the grievance? In other words, the campus administrator can legally "investigate themselves" as a level 1 investigation for all manner of wrongdoing. Only after this "self-investigation" may the employee go to the next higher administrator when evidence and witnesses may already be compromised. Exceptions include sexual harassment and discrimination. However, all other grievances to include violations of law/statute can and often are handled in this manner by even large school districts such as Killeen ISD. Granted, many Texas school districts do not do this because it is so obviously immoral and unethical, but still others, such as Killeen ISD, routinely handle grievances in this way as a matter of policy. Does your school district permit this? It’s actually legal to do this under existing Texas law. So far all the Texas gubernatorial candidates and most other candidates for the Texas legislature have failed to take a public stand on this immoral and unethical practice. It’s time we heard from them.
