Dear Mr. Black, I am disgusted by the government's response to the hurricane disaster relief effort. In disbelief, I digest accounts of anarchy, violence, looting, and chaos in New Orleans and the state of people who were either too sick or too poor to get out. They were left on dry sections of highway in sweltering heat without food, water, or information and no one in control, surrounded by corpses. There is no medical attention, and they are living in a stew of toxic chemicals, sewage, and stagnant water. Armed gangs of bandits are roaming the streets shooting at law enforcement. People are becoming desperate. In response, President Bush spouted off a few statistics about blankets and cots, but it was cold and typical of his inability to relate to humanity with the compassion and leadership that is needed in this crisis. More will die unless there is a major military presence sent into New Orleans with food, water, medical care, and restoration of order so they can be evacuated. The U.S. continues to spend billions fighting a vanity war in Iraq when we are clearly unable or unwilling to save our own. New Orleans is a war zone. It has never been more evident than now that corporate greed and war profiteering are what drives America, not the welfare of her citizens. Our priorities as a nation are fucked. If not for the heroism and sacrifice of ordinary people committing extraordinary acts of selflessness, I can't imagine what the state of affairs would be. I hope this tragedy serves as a wake-up call to Americans that we live under the illusion of safety, and this administration should be held accountable.
