Americans Need to Speak Out (Carefully)

RECEIVED Thu., Aug. 12, 2004

Dear Editor,
Why did Mike Clark-Madison attack Alex Jones in his "Access of Evil" commentary ["Austin@Large," News, Aug. 6]? Jones is trying to protect freedom of speech. Isn't that important to Clark-Madison? It seems Clark-Madison is defending a commitment to ignorance and is willing to be mollified and nullified by low-rating country music. My opinion is that if Clark-Madison doesn't care about freedom of speech he should get out of the news-writing business.
Taking freedom of speech away from Alex Jones, or anyone else, lessens the value of our Constitution and country. We Americans need to be able to speak out against our government when government goes wrong. That is the ultimate beneficent use of the First Amendment, and Alex Jones is a godsend and asset to our country because he does it so well.
Don't you there at The Austin Chronicle care about our Constitution anymore? I thank God that Alex Jones does, and isn't afraid to say so.
