Republicans Have Always Acted Just Like Republicans

RECEIVED Tue., July 6, 2004

Dear Sirs,
In response to David Porter's letter "Republicans Now Just Like Democrats" I find several things amusing ["Postmarks Online," July 1]. Obviously he was elsewhere during the Eighties under Reagan and Bush when the deficit went through the roof and spending money that we didn't have was the norm. Republicans have always played this game along with corporate and tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans. I don't know where you ever were told that these were Democrat policies, but you were misinformed. Thank goodness the Clinton administration did not take this approach and the economy was doing great back then. He handed Bush a budget surplus and guess what? We now have a soaring deficit, tax breaks for the wealthiest 1% (two of them), and all of this in less than three years. What I'm getting at, Mr. Porter, is that this is not new or unusual. This has been the Republican's economic policy for decades (carved in stone) even though they always find creative ways to call it other things.
