Questions About Electronic Voting

RECEIVED Wed., Feb. 4, 2004

Dear Editor,
I am wondering just what the procedure will be here in Austin and Travis County if it becomes necessary to have a recount of an election?
The electronic voting machines that we taxpayers have paid so much for ask us to confirm that our selections are really what we wanted, but they give us no assurance that our votes are recorded properly.
How can we know that the machines are distributed to the proper polling places on election day, and have been programmed to accept votes only for the candidates running in that particular district?
Who are the people responsible for programming those machines?
Have they posted a performance bond, or will the taxpayers have to accept an "Oops, we're sorry, but there seems to be a problem with your computers," if things get all fouled up?
