Discrimination Against Tattoos

RECEIVED Wed., Oct. 29, 2003

I am extremely puzzled as to why nonfranchise restaurants will not hire individuals if they have tattoos. Also, they will be dismissed from the workplace upon receiving a tattoo. (The employee handbook from one of these restaurants does not state that tattoos which are visible will lead to dismissal.) These restaurants are not upscale or family-oriented, but they will not hire an applicant if a tattoo is visible on the arms, torso, or leg. The applicants résumé is not even reviewed. At least make an attempt to review the applicant's past work performance. I'm a little upset because I am a professional with a professional job, and I have visible tattoos. I also work with the public. This is Austin, not Wall Street. I think it's absurd to discriminate against potential and current employees based on the colors on their skin.
Sincerely,
Lynn A. Frazier
