Bad Marketing

RECEIVED Wed., Aug. 20, 2003

Dearest Chronicle,
I wonder if Zen (the "Japanese" restaurant on Anderson and on South Congress) could consider not using someone else's religion as a cheap marketing ploy. (See their ad on p.40 of the Aug. 15 Chronicle (or, heck, any of their other ads, for that matter)).
    "Hey Buddha!"
    "Buddha likes it!"
Just how tacky and disrespectful is that?
It doesn't just stop with their ads. Their comment cards ask you to give your comments to Buddha. Apparently, Buddha runs the Zen restaurants! Who knew? Or, could it be that the management claims to be the latest incarnation? I wonder. One thing is for sure, the Zen restaurants have more to do with annoying Nineties Enigma music than they have to do with Zen Buddhism.
Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe this will just start a fun new trend. We could have Holy Trinity Pizza with slogans like "Jesus' favorite slice!" Maybe Veda Burger: Ganesha says, "This sure beats milk!" Heck how about Ramadan Ribs: "Allah loves the sauce!" I could go on, but I think you get my point.
I just wish Zen would get some common sense and a little decency and stop using other people's religions to market their products.
Wishing we could all have a little more respect for
   each other,
Sara M. Williams
