VHS, I can't quit you

I love this movie almost as much as I love my dog. But then Albert Finney looks better in swim trunks than my German shepherd does. Or at least he used to.

I wandered into the Movie Store on Saturday night with an itchy, already defeated feeling. I didn't know what I wanted, and walking into a video store without knowing what you want is like the inverse of going to the grocery store hungry. Instead of everything looking good, nothing looks good.

Unless, of course, you wander in to find the Movie Store is unloading its entire VHS inventory, for super-cheap, and instead of having to make one decision, you can make ten instead.**

At $3 per tape, I felt a little bit kid-in-a-candy-store... and at five tapes for $10, I figured it'd be like throwing money away to stop at four... and with those kind of savings, why not really make a go of it? (I might gently lean toward compulsiveness. I'm also seriously regretting not adding The Pirate Movie to the pile.)

Granted, they come in raggedy packaging, and the ribbon's a little rough on some of them, and a 15-year-old VHS is probably not the best way for me to finally break down and watch Fanny and Alexander, but there's something wonderfully comforting to that familiar sound of tape wheels whirring. Besides, haven't you been feeling a bit guilty about your Netflix subscription when there are nice places like the Movie Store right around the corner? Also: Two York Peppermint Patties for a quarter!

The Movie Store is located at the corner of 43rd St. and Guadalupe. The sale presumably continues until stock runs out.

** Since you asked: 1) Fanny and Alexander 2) Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore 3) All About My Mother 4) The Love Letter 5) A Clockwork Orange 6) The Lady From Shanghai 7) Two for the Road 8) Shag: The Movie 9) Five Easy Pieces 10) Mansfield Park
