Medi-Pot Patients Denied Organ Transplants
Although medical marijuana is legal in Washington State, patients who might be in need of an organ transplant – think hepatitis C patients, for example – apparently need to think twice before availing themselves of medi-pot: If they go that route, the University of Washington Medical Center won't let 'em on the transplant list. That's how it went down for 56-year-old Seattle musician Timothy Garon, who died earlier this month from hep C, after being denied a place on the liver transplant list at UW. Garon had used medi-mari, in compliance with state law, and that's the main reason the hospital's transplant committee offered for denying him access to an uninfected liver, reports the Associated Press. Indeed, according to the Seattle weekly The Stranger, area hospitals have used patient use of medi-mari, legal there since 1998, as a viable reason to deny an otherwise-qualified patient from receiving an organ. Their reason (prepare for the lameness): Aspergillus mold. Seriously. According to statements provided to the weekly by two area hospitals, aspergillus mold is occasionally found in both marijuana and tobacco; if a smoker is given a transplant, the mold could cause infection. And since the hospitals consider marijuana an "addictive drug," they believe that transplant recipients may not be able to stop smoking after the transplant, thus allowing aspergillus to take hold, cause infection and then cause organ rejection in the organ recipient.

DPS Withholds Krusee Arrest Vid
Remember the recent DWI arrest of outgoing state Rep. Mike Krusee, R-Round Rock? Well, Attorney General Greg Abbott has decided to withhold the dash-cam video of his arrest – at the request of Texas Department of Public Safety lawyers. In a letter sent yesterday, Abbott agreed to the DPS request under section 552.108(a)(1) of the Texas Government Code, which says "Information held by a law enforcement agency or prosecutor that deals with the detection, investigation, or prosecution of crime is excepted from the requirements of Section 552.021 if: (1) release of the information would interfere with the detection, investigation, or prosecution of crime;" So exactly what is DPS worried about? And why weren't they so eager to withhold when Sen. Gonzalo Barrientos got busted for DWI in 2001? Or is this just another example of DPS and their "redaction is fine with us" approach to legislators on tape?

Maximalize Yourself
This past Sunday's New York Times magazine featured an interesting story on the rise of the one-man band, spotlighting Owen Pallett (Final Fantasy), Panda Bear, and Dallasite Annie Clark (St. Vincent). Writer John Wray hones in on the need to minimalize (or, as Clark put it, "Maximalize yourself") in the current indie rock culture, and Pallett had an especially unique take on it: “Drummers ruin bands,” he said simply, as if the fact were common knowledge. “There are probably about 10 people in indie rock who know how to play the drums. If you’re in a mediocre band, just fire the drummer, and chances are you’ll have the best band in the world.” He goes on to give the best line in the piece to Noah Lennox, aka Panda Bear, who he describes as the "drummer who fired himself." Speaking of which, a friend sent along this video of a new and, sadly, real Sharper Image product.

Mr. Sulu Embarks on Final Frontier
George Takai the man behind the beloved Star Trek helm officer Mr. Sulu, will soon be "sweating like a bridegroom." (OK, Trekkies, which episode was that from?) The 71-year-old actor and sci-fi con regular has announced his plans to wed his longtime partner and biz manager, Brad Altman. Takai is the second big name we've heard taking the plunge since the historic California Supreme Court decision overturning the ban on gay marriage. Ellen Degeneres announced on her TV talk show that she and partner Portia de Rossi were tying the knot.

Rewrite Prom Night
While we are of the opinion that Molly Ringwald peaked early with Facts of Life and never did much of anything after to impress us, we are a big fan of bad prom dresses and cancer research, and thus we heartily recommend you to GrapeVine Market's Pretty in Pink 80's Prom this Saturday. The evening includes a silent auction, dancing, and an outdoor screening of the classic John Hughes film. Pretty in Pink is just one of many in a list of essential girl movies that we never got the appeal of (see also: Sixteen Candles, Grease, Labyrinth); frankly, we were bored to tears by professional whinester Molly Ringwald and the yawning, super-posh Andrew McCarthy. (We much prefer his existential-lite wounded writer in St. Elmo's Fire, the love theme to which forever sets off a Pavlovian lifting of our spirits. "Man in Motion" is pretty terrific, too.) That said: Jon Cryer's Pretty in Pink record-store rock-out to "Try a Little Tenderness" is one for the ages. GrapeVine's 80's Prom also includes a crowning of Prom King and Queen, so here's your chance to rewrite history. Unless you already won in high school, in which case, we suggest you stop hogging all the glory. Some of us were late bloomers, you know. The Pretty in Pink 80's Prom takes place 7-11pm, Saturday, May 24, at GrapeVine Market. Tickets are $10 per person in advance and $15 dollars at the door. All proceeds benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure Austin. Go here for more info.

TXRG at Home in Houston
The Texas Rollergirls continued their touring season clean sweep this weekend with their latest trip to Houston. The Honky Tonk Heartbreakers took down the Bayou City Bosse$ 86-49. That puts the TXRG 2-0 against Houston's league teams (since April's 126-83 domination of the Psych Ward Sirens by the Hell Marys), and 4-0 for the 2008 touring season so far. But this latest Houston victory has got to raise the stakes for July 13, when it's the battle of the touring teams as the No. 4 Women's Flat Track Derby Association-ranked Texecutioners travel south to take on the No. 24 ranked HaRD Knocks. Will Austin rule H-Town, or will the home team remind everyone why they call it Clutch City? Of course, there's still the little matter of the June 1 visit by the Big Easy Rollergirls from New Orleans, who challenge the seemingly unstoppable Hotrod Honeys. In the league bout, the Hell Marys have to get past the resurgent Hustlers to have a chance at getting into the championship. Tickets available now.

An Old Soul
The biggest surprise at last month’s Old Settler’s Music Festival was Emily Elbert. She won the Youth Talent Competition in 2007, which granted her a spot on the main stage this year, and though still a teen, the Coppell, Texas native possesses an old soul. Elbert's atypical for many reasons. While many her age are pining to become the next American Idol, she rejects the notion. “As many people come up and ask me if I’m 14 as tell me to try out for American Idol,” the 19-year-old explains. “They mean well. It’s nice that they would want to help me out, but that’s not exactly where I want to go.” Both parents are professional musicians who exposed her to a broad range of sounds. “It was instilled in me from when I was little, when I was listening to jazz,” she recalls. “I think it’s to my advantage to educate myself on different kinds of music and the expression that comes out of the world. Everything is wrapped up in music, from politics to religion to history to poetry. There’s so much more than is possible to understand. But it’s a great thing to try. I’m interested in as much music as I can wrap my arms around.”
