Thanks for Wayne
Wayne Schmidt remembered: The man who feeds the gay on the holiday.
By Kate X Messer, 11:44AM, Thu. Nov. 27, 2008

If you, like we, are orphaned this fine Thanksgiving, meet us and a couple hundred queer brethren at Charlie's Nightclub & Grill on Lavaca today at 1pm. Every Thanksgiving and every Christmas for the past 22 years the club has offered a sumptuous feast with all the trimmin's. For fans and regulars of the club, this is, of course old news. But if you are not acquainted with the club and its annual tradition – or if you're new blood and want to know where your fambly at: Come on down!
And as you revel in the generous portions (truly, Charlie's has mastered this meal) take a moment to consider Wayne Schmidt, or Daddy Wayne as he was better known, who passed away this past Spring. Wayne began the tradition at the capitol-area club over two decades ago to make sure that everybody had a place to go for the holidays. The tradition is now named for him.
Please pardon us: We are having a "We Are Family" moment.
Sigh. Thank you. And thanks, Charlie's. Perhaps we'll see y'all at Daddy Wayne's FREE Thanksgiving Dinner?
