First Listen: Mrs. Glass “When the Levee Breaks”

Live music generally proves scarce on Thanksgiving Day. Check our music listings Wednesday, when the Chronicle comes out a day early thanks to the holiday. Just like every Thursday night, however, you can find Mrs. Glass vibrating strings and sipping whiskey at the Blackheart.

Austin’s swampy blues trio maintains a longstanding residency at the Rainey Street bar. In February, that provoked a live recording that captured the seasoned interactions of guitarist/vocalist Jordan Webster, bassist/keyboardist Ivan Evangelista, and drummer Ian Fry at the cozy, 125-year-old structure.

That performance, captured by house engineer Matt Lindquist and mixed by Evangelista, arrived on vinyl last month as Mrs. Glass Live at the Blackheart. The LP’s planned as the first in a series of live records the Blackheart hopes to release on its resident acts. It’s Mrs. Glass’ second disc of the year, with White Horse affiliates Good Horse Records having put out Happy Every Day this past summer.

Here’s a cut of Mrs. Glass firing off an intense, slide-guitar-imbued version of “When the Levee Breaks,” originally cut by Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie, and then famously adapted by Led Zeppelin. The lyrics are no doubt profound for Webster, who left New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.
