5 Minutes with Portugal the Man
Mssrs. Gorley & O’Quin, or is it Ritchotte & Carothers?
By Derek Van Wagner, 3:45PM, Wed. Oct. 30, 2013
The email confirmed it: at 1pm on Oct. 12, I’d do an Austin City Limits Music Festival video interview with Portugal. the Man drummer Kane Ritchotte and bassist Zach Carothers. What eventually occurred was a couple of bandmates off. All of them tape an episode of live concert staple Austin City Limits tonight at the Moody Theater.
My looseleaf sheet of member-targeted questions became all but superfluous when PTM singer John Gourley showed up alongside keyboardist Kyle O’Quin. I’d been expecting Ritchotte and Carothers; I didn’t have anything prepped for the two who showed up. So I pulled a quick switch, told Gourley and Carothers to assume the personas of their absent bandmates, and rolled on with the questioning.
For the next five minutes, we covered everything from Ritchotte’s guitar playing to Carothers’ affinity for Jackalope hamburgers to the the Alaska band’s first memory of stepping out of their van into the Texas sun.
Portugal. the Man returns to Austin tonight for an 8pm taping of Austin City Limits at the Moody Theater.
