The city of Austin puts music in its libraries

Library Rock!

“For more information about the Bright Light Social Hour, visit your local library!” It was a throwaway line BLSH used in promo materials, but it resonates in the city of Austin’s Music For Kids programs at select library branches. Monday featured Marcia Ball at the Spicewood Springs branch.

The program is sponsored by and came about through the City of Austin’s Music Division and the Austin Public Library. Previously featured local acts include Sara Hickman, Guy Forsyth, and Courtney Sanchez, but don’t fret if this is the first you’ve heard of Music For Kids. There are three other shows this week.

Tomorrow Tuesday, July 17, Gina Chavez performs at Cepeda Branch and Neal Kassanoff at the Southeast Austin Branch. On Thursday, Wendy Colonna is special guest at the University Hills Branch. All performances are 30 minutes long and start at 2pm. The series wraps up Saturday with Lucas Miller at Faulk Central Branch.

And 30 minutes is just about right for something like this, maybe even too long for some of those with short attention spans. Still, the setting alone offers parents an inexpensive way to spend time with kids in a place that can tickle the imagination in any direction.

And who knows, the next generation might even discover the Bright Light Social Hour.
