Dubbed "the writer's film festival," AFF brings an assortment of creatives and world premieres to town. Hobnob with acclaimed screenwriters and try to get your spec screenplay into the hands of studio executives. Festival passes cost $50 or $12 per ticket, and are available online or at the venues.

Ruby Rae Spiegel's intense drama, set almost entirely in the girls' locker room of a Florida high school, explores "the complexities of female friendship, abortion, adolescents in crisis, and the terrifying process of becoming yourself." Something for Nothing Theater stages Shakespeare's comedy classic under starlight in Ramsey Park, with directors Allison Dillon and Rosalind Faires presenting a version in which Benedick and Beatrice are both played as women. Prithee bring a blanket or chair, pack a picnic, and invite some friends along to this out-of-doors romance.

Twenty-three-year-old Adam Aminé Daniel started his rap career rather innocuously, making diss tracks aimed at rival high schools in the Portland, Ore., area. Son of Eritrean and Ethiopian immigrants, the rapper released two mixtapes, then quickly emerged as a potential star with multi-platinum hit single “Caroline.” The Billboard Hot 100 charter, which peaked at No. 11, remains the highlight of the former Portland State University marketing major’s much-anticipated debut album, Good for You, a relentlessly positive and remarkably honest turn.

In addition to the feature films, short narratives, documentaries, and animations, the festival hosts a poster exhibit, guest filmmakers, and Polish food treats. We could probably just mention that this exhibition (featuring a quintet of assemblage artists) contains work by Steve Brudniak and watch the smarter crowds gather for some deep gawking … but we wouldn't want to diss the talented likes of Barbara Irwin, John Sager, Larry Seaman, and Steve Wiman – whose complex three-dimensional creations are also well worthy of your time.

70mm: Carpenter remakes this 1951 sci-fi classic about shape-shifting aliens from the Antarctic. Much grislier than Howard Hawks' original, Carpenter's version is also more a study of internalization than group dynamics.

That excellent gallery in Canopy presents a group exhibit featuring work by Texas artists who are inspired by any of the natural sciences as a majority of their current artistic practice. Which, lucky for the viewer, means that the talents represented include Laurie Frick, Jules Buck Jones, Calder Kamin, Cathy Savage, David Martínez, and more. Quant suff! Recommended!

Sure, you might want to catch a few of the films being screened at this 12th annual festival – and we'll let Old Man Kupecki and his crew tell you about those.
