    Of Montreal, Tele Novella [outside]

Trash music is my life/ because you can’t doesn’t mean you shouldn’t,” declares Kevin Barnes on “Genius in the Wind,” closer to of Montreal’s latest LP, May’s Lady on the Cusp. Nineteen albums in, Barnes continues to confound and provoke, his recent relocation from Athens, Ga., to Vermont not clipping his creative sonic maelstroms in the least. The album roils predictably eclectic, an intricate if chaotically layered barrage of styles crashing in scarring, lurid electronic waves. Lockhart quartet Tele Novella open with their gorgeously haunting and mystical ballads from last year’s Poet’s Tooth. – Doug Freeman

      Special Screenings

Ghost in the Shell 2 (Innocence) (2004)

I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings, but if you had anything remotely nice to say about the ScarJo adaptation of Ghost in the Shell (which I refuse to call anything other than “White Savior Complex”), we probably aren’t going to be friends. Alamo Mueller is doing everyone and their mom a favor screening the sequel to the cult classic original anime film that forces us to confront the moral quandary of forcing humanoid beings to do our dirty work, then dispose of them when they become obsolete to their human makers. If that sounds familiar, it’s because the trope has been done and redone in almost every form of popular media, and it all started with a Japanese animation from 1995. – Cy White

      Marriage Equality Week

Nine years ago, a Supreme Court ruling made same-sex marriage legal in the U.S. of A. While progress has been up and down since then – oof, actually it’s been more down than up – the historic moment marked a turning point for the queer community legislatively. As the office who issued Texas’ first gay marriage license, the Travis County Clerk’s Office celebrates the 2015 ruling with a whole week of free wedding ceremonies. Check countyclerk.traviscountytx.gov for further details on marriage license deadlines, specific locations, and other bureaucratic minutiae – and I’ll bring the rice! – James Scott

Sahaj Kaur Kohli: But What Will People Say?

In conversation with Dr. Pooja Lakshmin, author and founder of Brown Girl Therapy Sahaj Kaur Kohli discusses her new work that rethinks “traditional therapy and self-care, creating much-needed space for those left out of the narrative.” From a childhood spent immersed in multiple cultures, Kohli uses her own narrative to challenge the gaps created by our largely individualistic mental health model and offers tips and tools for those who feel left out by the Eurocentric system. Purchase a copy of the book at the event, and you can have it signed by the author herself! : – James Scott

Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! (1990)

One of my stances – there are many – is that there should be no boring movies, ever. You can say a lot about Pedro Almodóvar’s controversial romance, which features Antonio Banderas as a lovesick kidnapper freshly released from his inpatient psychiatric stay and Victoria Abril as his film star object of affection, but you can never say it’s boring. Bold colors, a thought-provoking gender dynamic, and a BDSM miasma fogging up the lens: As his follow-up to Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Almodóvar chose a real queer-ass straight movie to make. Catch this Queer Film Theory 101 screening for June, or forever wonder what might have been. – James Scott

      Abundant Masculinities: Turning Toward

“What happens when we turn toward our pain?” Over four Tuesdays and together with other men and trans masculine folks, this community-building series tackles the question of patriarchy – how it benefits men, harms them, and how we might find a way to practice mindful masculinity. Abundant Masculinities founder Kanoa Arteaga leads the four-week class in group activities, journaling, art-making, and more, with over eight years of experience in masculinities work. Tickets run on a sliding scale of $5-30, but one ticket covers all four sessions. – James Scott

      Austin Public Pools Opening

Hoo-wee! Does anything feel better than a dip in the pool during a hot Texas summer? While some among us may be privileged to own private watering holes, most of us get to enjoy the great Austin PARD’s work at the 44 public aquatic facilities to choose from this summer. You’ve got regional, neighborhood, and community pools; a wading pool; splash pads; and the crown jewel: Barton Springs. Check austintexas.gov/pools-splashpads for up-to-date info on which pools are open, what their entry fee is, and whether you have what it takes to be a public pool lifeguard. Now, outta the way if you don’t wanna get wet: I’m gonna do a cannonball! – James Scott

      Bat City Bingo

Mamma mia: Did you know the game we call bingo originated in Italy? Descended from the Italian lotto game, bingo has been delighting young and old – okay, mostly old – since the 1500s. Enjoy boffo bingo from your friends at Bat City Bingo, who bring free “beano” to patios all over town, every Tuesday at North Loop bar & kitchen Double Trouble. Advisable drink pairings with your bingo card: for the sober, a hot choc, and for the spirited, an Aperol Spritz. Foodwise, I mean, a taco goes with everything – this writer suggests the vegan picadillo. – James Scott

      Deanna Miesch: “Flatland Revisited”

Art and … math? Not as improbable as it may seem, especially when seen through the veil of fantasy. And that’s exactly what artist/gallerist/therapist Deanna Miesch does. Compiling works inspired by 1800s mathematician Edwin A. Abbott’s imaginary world of Flatland (with touches of fellow mathematician Lewis Carroll’s Wonderland, of course), Miesch presents reality with a fanciful twist. Her visuals show our world, blurred or tilted a little askew. It’s easy to see portals to another world in every line and angle. What dimensions will you discover? – Cat McCarrey

      Free Day

Art! Oh, I love it. But sadly, when I open my pockets, moths fly out. Good news for me and all my broke friends: Every Tuesday, the Blanton opens its doors to all visitors free of charge. Why, unburdened by the weight of an empty wallet, Austinites can mull the strange world of contemporary womanhood in “Unbreakable: Feminist Visions from the Gilberto Cárdenas and Dolores Garcia Collection.” Or walk beneath the silver and mesh sculptures of Marie Watt’s “Sky Dances Light.” Or explore the past through its artistic pieces in “The Floating World: Masterpieces of Edo Japan.” Or enjoy any of the many, MANY other exhibitions available on this day: all for free. – James Scott
