Curators Bob Nickas and Julia V. Hendrickson discuss the art of Huma Bhabha this weekend, right before the closing of her "Other Forms of Life" exhibition that's been enlivening the Contemporary Austin's Jones Center venue Downtown.

All Austin families are invited to attend The Contemporary Austin's free January creative workshop at Laguna Gloria, inspired by Nic Nicosia's figurative steel sculpture, the twins. Make a mirror-image work of art, then catch an interactive performance by actors from the Hideout Theatre!

The acclaimed sculptor – longtime Austinite, originally from Peru – is the latest artist in this ongoing series of community conversations. We reckon, with Almuelle discussing her history and experiences with art (including serigraphy – this is presented by Coronado Studios, and it's PrintAustin time again!), this is a fine treat for local artlovers.

The wonders of PrintAustin are heralded in the excellent grayDUCK space, with Emmons presenting his records of informal temporary structures and ingenious vernacular designs, with Nam offering images of man-made environments and objects and cut flower arrangements, with a two-person show that complements and contrasts across the common ground of expert printmaking.

This is a complementary pair of domestic dream-rooms, with Jaime Zuverza and design duo Transmountain collaborating on calm and surreal furniture-art in the front gallery and Rachel Freeman creating an all-over installation of color blocks, reclaimed pipes, and precise Micron pen drawings to transform the adjoining room.

If someone's going to be presenting other forms of life, how lucky for those forms and for the viewers of those forms, that it's the New York–based artist Huma Bhabha, here offering an unforgettable array of human, alien, god, plant, animal, and machinelike entities, rendered in her unique combination of representation and abstraction, in two dimensions and three, in whatever media works best. Celebrated in professional art circles, welcomed with a mixture of wonder and fear by ordinary citizens with eyes to see, Bhabha's creations provide an infusion of transgenre brilliance and savagery that Austin, in particular, needs right about now.

The Austin-based artist Eliza Thomas works with ink on kozo paper, exploring the beauty of decay. This results in a visual dynamic of strength and unexpected calm that dominates Thomas’ large-scale works.
