Cactus Lee, Theo Lawrence, Adam Amram

Kevin Dehan has a voice as easy as a rocking chair and lyrics that feel like you’re thumbing through a scrapbook found at a rural Texas estate sale. His folk project has always been prolific (six studio albums, a live album, and three EPs since establishing in 2019) but this fall’s been especially productive. October’s Caravan features gorgeous Seventies folk production, November’s Big Red offers a trove of melodic barroom odes, and the recent Lagniappe Sessions sequel floats incredible covers, like Butthole Surfers’ “TV Star” and a version of the Dead’s “West L.A. Fadeaway” that comes across like Bill Withers. A trio of shows pairs the Blaze Foley acolyte with Theo Lawrence (Antone’s), the Point (C-Boy’s), and Ramsay Midwood (STP) – plus Adam Amram (Antone’s & STP).

Portrayal of Guilt, Nuclear Daisies, Porcelain ATX, Burnt Skull

On mid-April metal masterclass Devil Music, Portrayal of Guilt mixes demented orchestral strings with pure, guitar-driven screamo rage. The threepiece expands their black metal underworld with a headlining slot at their self-titled record label’s showcase, fittingly held at the ever-subversive, living-room-sized Chess Club. Post-apocalyptic dance punk crew Nuclear Daisies lean decidedly more shoegaze-y than their label’s creators, but deliver an equally head-banging live energy. Industrial metal duo Burnt Skull live up to their name with brain-melting distortion, while up-and-coming post-hardcore outfit Porcelain releases their debut effort through POG Records in February.
