It’s a double win for Bob Trevino Likes It. Not only did Tracie Laymon’s cringe-cute comedy win the Grand Jury Award for narrative feature at last week’s South by Southwest Film & TV Festival, now it’s walked away with the audience award.
The comedy, starring Euphoria‘s Barbie Ferreira as a woman with two father figures (played by French Stewart and John Leguizamo) walks away from the fest with two of its biggest prizes.
In a big year in the Headliners category, including the world premieres of The Fall Guy, Road House, and The Idea of You, SXSW audiences went with a hard hitting passion project: Monkey Man, the directorial debut of The Green Knight star Dev Patel.
It was a particularly strong year for Austin films, with three big wins for movies with local connections. Baseball documentary Clemente about overlooked legend Roberto Clemente (produced by Austin Film Society board member Mike Blizzard) hit a home run in the Documentary Spotlight category. Austin-based director Greg Kwedar (Transpecos) took the audiences’ laurels for Festival Favorite for prison drama Sing Sing, starring another filmmaker familiar to and with Austin, Fear the Walking Dead star Colman Domingo (Zola, Rustin). Rounding out a trio of home town wins was Faders Up: The John Aielli Experience, the loving and funny tribute to the definitional Austin radio host by directed by David Hartstein and Sam Wainwright Douglas, took top honors among musical true stories in the 24 Beats Per Second program.
Here’s the full list of winners: congratulations to all.
