ILLfest Day 2 w/ Wooli, BigXthaPlug, Tisoki, Ray Volpe, Netsky, Sodown, Delta Heavy, Taiki Nulight, more

Back to test local seismographs, music and street art celebration iLLfest looks to rattle the Capitol. Producing big, brash dubstep with elements of jungle, trance, and trap, PEEKABOO arrives with anthems like “Babatunde” and his latest, “leaving (dont tell me).” Tape B brings heavy nostalgia, reimagining classic hip-hop into festival smashes. Wooli’s dark melodic bass is reminiscent of Flux Pavilion’s early work. In an interesting fusion, Dallas rapper BigXthaPlug (breakout hit “Mmhmm”) and Bay City lyricist That Mexican OT, best known for his 2023 Paul Wall-featured single “Johnny Dang,” will also perform. Belgian drum and bass producer/DJ Netsky comes as this year’s truly legendary figure. – Kahron Spearman

    Last Voyage of the Voyagers

Austin’s comedy scene is synonymous with improv, but it’s not all about the “yes, and.” Sketch comedy troupe the Voyagers goes on stage with a lot more than a wing, a prayer, and hopes that the audience has some good prompts. Promising live sketch comedy from the bottom of the barrel of their hearts, these laughs from the end times come from writer/director John Gholson, who is set to become the toast of this year’s Tribeca Festival as star of the new Austin-made horror, Man Finds Tape. But before he terrorizes the Big Apple, catch him and the rest of the Voyagers as they find humor in these dumpster fire days each Saturday night through May. – Richard Whittaker

    Special Screenings

    Seed of Chucky (2004)

Fifth in the Child’s Play series yet the first to be helmed by its creator Don Mancini, this Aughts nightmare makes for fun viewing – if you’re a freak! That’s why Hyperreal’s screening it in their new series, Freaks Only, which focuses on works “by, for, and about freaks.” Fans of this doll-ightfully dark franchise will recall that fourth installment Bride of Chucky ends with a hideous baby birthed from titular bride Tiffany’s rubber downstairs parts. Seed picks up the thread posthaste, with Chuck and Tiff’s progeny escaping their circus cage to find Mom & Dad. But there’s no hope for the kid being normal when their DNA’s laced with New Jersey serial killer blood. Also features Jennifer Tilly playing Jennifer Tilly, which is how you know the gays finally took over this slasher series. – James Scott

Severed: A Severance Fan Fiction Improv Show

Fan fiction is the adult equivalent to playing with dolls – an expression of creativity through objects made by another. Director Courtney Hopkin has, over the month of May, invited cast members like Derek Sims, Lahari Dunn, Grace McQueeny, Asaf Ronen, and many other talented improvisers to be those dolls for audience members eager to see what their favorite Lumon buddies might be up to offscreen. This show’s no different, with all your theories, headcanons, romantic ships, and otherwise invited as fun, fanfic-y stage fodder. It’s a step up from a late-night Archive of Our Own binge read, if you know what I mean. – James Scott

Willie Nelson's Fourth of July Picnic w/ Bob Dylan, the Avett Brothers, the Mavericks, Asleep & the Wheel, Tami Neilson

Ninety-two-year-old progressive cowboy and patron saint of Austin Willie Nelson keeps his annual tradition (since 1973) alive and definitely kickin’ with musical friends like Bob Dylan, the Avett Brothers, and others taking the Circuit of the Americas stage. And since we’re ostensibly celebrating America’s anniversary, there will of course be fireworks to spark whatever patriotism might still be lingering in your soul. He might have a few more scratches, but Trigger, and the man behind the guitar for that matter, still sound like a tumbleweed rolling free. In so many ways, Willie is keeping our hopes alive.
