Austin’s own high-profile cage fighting promotion, King of Kombat is heading back to town this weekend, with a 10-fight card at the Crockett Center on Nov. 3. Their first event, held in September, had 2,000 people through the turnstyles, proving there’s a market for mixed martial arts combat in Austin.
Flying in this weekend across state lines for the main event is Team Toolshed’s Chilo Gonzalez, whose win/loss ratio seems to get better with every bout. Running 26-8 (pretty impressive for a man that once dragged through a five-bout losing streak) the Colorado native made waves earlier this year with his big upset defeat of Bodog contract fighter Kyacey Uscola (on Uscola’s home turf, no less.) He’ll be taking on Amarillo MMAer Phillip Preece, who’s giving away three inches but outweighs Gonzalez by up to 20 pounds of fighting weight. But Gonzalez, who was famous for taking on any fight, any time, has started picking his fights a little smarter, and preparing more, so don’t expect either man to go down soft.
We’ll be talking to the King of Kombat crew over the week, so keep posted for updates.
