If you’ve read this week’s Austin Chronicle, you’ll have seen my piece about Meet Me There, the new horror from local indie production house Greenless Studios. Now they’re crowdfunding their next project, and taking a radically different direction with the deeply personal drama Paper Cuts.
Written and produced by Kelli Horan, and directed by Ima Leupp, Paper Cuts stars Danielle Evon Ploeger as Jess, a 26-year-old woman who seems to have everything together. Then everything seems to fall apart when she returns home for her mother’s wedding, but Jess quickly has to realize that old issues just don’t disappear with a change of address.
In this follow-up to their first feature, Wind and Rain, the filmmakers are determined to make a sensitive but incisive examination of the issues of eating disorders, self-harm, and depression: “This film tackles issues that are often either ignored or only discussed in hushed tones. We bring the issues of depression to light in a realistic and relatable way that helps bring insight and hope.”
The project is currently raising funds through its Indiegogo page, and is trying to raise $15,000 by Feb. 13. Greenless is also planning a fundraising launch party on Feb. 7 at the Spider House Cafe and Ballroom, 2908 Fruth, with the cast and crew in attendance.
Another movie with a local link is New Zealand vampire comedy What We Do in the Shadows. Wait, what’s the local connection if it’s made in New Zealand? It was one of the best reviewed and received films at SXSW 2014, but for some baffling reason it does not have full U.S. theatrical distribution, and will only open in New York and Los Angeles on Feb. 13. Co-creators Jemaine Clement (he of Flight of the Conchords fame) and Taikia Waititi are trying to raise $400,000 via Kickstarter. That’s an ambitious target, but this will pay to get the movie playing in 70 cities nationwide.
One in a Crowd is a series intended to showcase Texas film and tech projects that are crowdfunding their way to a goal, be it distribution, a prototype, or production costs. If you have a project that we should know about, email us at filmflam@austinchronicle.com.
