I heard there was a mistletoe shortage this year. Tough luck for those who wanted to steal a furtive kiss at their annual holiday bashes. New Year’s is different, though. You’re supposed to kiss someone at midnight. You’re supposed to have a partner to kiss at midnight.
As Josh Rosenblatt described in his review of former Austin resident Alex Holdridge’s In Search of a Midnight Kiss, “Being alone at the stroke of midnight on New Years Eve is the most horrible of fleeting sensations.” The indie film tells the story of a twentysomething guy who places a classified ad for someone with whom to spend New Year’s Eve. Shot in splendid black-and white, the film “is a valentine through and through to Los Angeles,” says Kimberley Jones in an interview with Holdridge, who shot some of the scenes in Austin locations and uses Austin musicians such as Will Sheff and the Asylum Street Spankers on the soundtrack. Raise a glass and purse your lips for In Search of a Midnight Kiss.
