Ready to make your play for the Iron Throne? Austin-based game publisher Devolver Digital has just announced a new variant of its successful Reigns title in collaboration with none other than HBO’s world-conquering Game of Thrones.
In hindsight, it’s a perfect pairing: Devolver’s Reigns (developed with UK-based studio Nerial) is a swipe-style app-based game about ascending to the throne of a fantastical medieval kingdom – and then hanging on to it, balancing out the demands and needs of the peasants, aristocrats, clerics, and warring factions under your rule. Part of the appeal is that you can take a … shall we say pragmatic approach to keeping the filthy curs under your steely grip, and if any fantasy franchise knows anything about dealing with adversity and adversaries with a sharp blade or 12, it’s Game of Thrones.
The play is simple: In this card-style strategy game, you’ll be seated on the Iron Throne, and using a Tinder-esque swiping mechanism to either deny or indulge the requests of characters from the series (if they get too needy or rambunctious, well, cards tear easily, if you’re prepared to deal with the consequences). The game will include all the locations and aristocrats you know so well (if in adorably drawn style), plus the instantly recognizable score from the show by Ramin Djawadi.
So while fans will have to wait until 2019 to see the final outcome of the fights for power (Can anyone ever stop the Night King? How bloody will Arya’s path of revenge be? And, oh, Jon Snow, will you ever know anything?), Reigns: Game of Thrones is available for pre-order now for Apple, Android, and Steam www.reignsgame.com (cost $3.99), and will be unleashed on Oct. 18.
