Maybe March madness, with all its down-to-the-buzzer breathlessness, was infectious? Just two weeks shy of its 2014 festival, Cine Las Americas still hasn’t announced its complete lineup – but today it did herald an opening and closing night film.
Pelo Malo
Kicking off the 17th annual Cine Las Americas International Film Festival on Tuesday, April 22, will be Francisco Franco’s Tercera Llamada (Last Call), based on Franco’s own play about a Mexican theatrical company putting on a production of Albert Camus’ Caligula. Closing the fest will be Pelo Malo (Bad Hair), a Venezuelan drama, written and directed by Mariana Rondón, about a 9 year old boy exploring his cultural and sexual identity via his hair; it previously screened to good reviews at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The festival runs April 22-27 at the Marchesa Hall & Theatre, Alamo Drafthouse Village, Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center, and Jones Auditorium at St. Ed’s Ragsdale Center. See www.cinelasamericas.org for ticketing info.
