On Monday, March 28, the AISD school board voted to begin the process to rename Lee Elementary, which is currently named in honor of Confederate General Robert E. Lee.
The board voted eight in favor, with Trustee Ann Teich abstaining. Discussions about renaming the school had begun last November, and can be viewed as part of a larger, national discussion about Confederate monuments in general (for more on that, see “Written in Stone,” May 29).
If you’re interested in submitting a nomination, you can visit www.austinisd.org/naming, or send your nomination in by mail to the Community Engagement Office, Facility Naming Team, 1111 W. Sixth St., A-230, Austin, TX 78703. Nominations open at 8am, March 29, and close at 5pm, April 15. According to a press release, “Staff will compile nominations and coordinate with the Campus Advisory Council in preparation for the board to take action May 23.”
