If the Housing Authority of the City of Austin (HACA) is unable to use a $300,000 U.S. Housing and Urban Development Choice Neighborhoods Planning Grant to revitalize Rosewood Courts, District 3 Council Member Pio Renteria would encourage HACA to redevelop Chalmers Courts on Fourth Street instead. “We’re seeing so much commercial development in that area,” he said, “it would be great to have some funding to build some nice apartments there, with a significant portion being affordable housing.” Renteria said that he would like Chalmers to follow the Mueller model, where the appearance of the affordable housing matches the look of the rest of the area. However, Renteria admits that prospect would be far down the line. “Maybe in 2018,” he joked.
