Congratulations, Austin ISD students and anyone whose company works off the AISD clock: Forecasts of ice overnight mean the area’s largest school district is pushing back the start of classes on Feb. 24 by two hours.
Several school districts either closed on Monday or cancelled after-school activities. AISD resisted, but with the current forecast, they have announced a late start. This will be a popular decision with staff and families, not least that (unlike the series of closures last February), the decision was made before 6am.
AISD is not alone in delaying opening:Lake Travis ISD has announced a similar two hour push back, while Austin Community College, Travis County offices and the City of Austin will remain closed until 10am. The University of Texas will re-open at 10am, but classes will not restart until 11am.
The general advice for drivers is to be cautious about ice, especially on bridges and elevated roadways, and be extra-sure to allow enough braking distance. As for public transit, Capitol Metro will be placing bus routes 2, 275, 331 and 350 on detour (more info at capmetro.org/). UT shuttles will not start running until 9.15am.
