The scale of the 1,017 staff cuts Superintendent Meria Carstarphen will present to the AISD Board of Trustees on Monday is daunting enough. Now district parents and employees have a chance to pick apart the presentation, and it’s clearer now which schools, offices, and individual jobs are under the lay-off axe.

You can see the full numbers here. Hidden in the administrative coding are two realities: One, even though this was updated on Friday, it’s old numbers, since it only lists 1,012 positions. Two, that the bulk of these are specific posts. There are already people in the district looking through this list and knowing that they are the only person in their school or office with the listed position.

The obvious impact will be on schools: Part of this was known from the recent changes in the staffing formulas, and the emphasis will be on how many teaching jobs will go. However, the terms “administration” and “classified” hide a lot of vital positions, and as people drill through the numbers, there are bound to be a lot of questions.

Why so many losses in the central office for special education, community education, learning services and support for at-risk kids? Why is Carstarphen proposing completely eliminating her press office, leaving the local media with no-one to contact? Why are eight blue collar jobs on the line at the warehouse?

And, just as importantly, why is Carstarphen in New York?

It also poses a new challenge for the Save Austin Schools Coalition: Their strategy so far has been about protecting neighborhood schools, but the question is whether they will restrategize to protect the staff and programs within them as well.

Here are the proposed cuts by department and school, with a little bit of a breakdown for teaching staff:
