ACC TRUSTEE, PLACE 3

It was good news on the Austin Community College ballot for an Austin ISD veteran: former trustee Mark Williams won his first term on the ACC board, defeating Place 1 incumbent Tim Mahoney, 55% to 44%. Place 2 goes to a run-off, with ACC Foundation Board member Gigi Edwards Bryant (33%) and businesswoman Jade Chang Sheppard (28%) heading to a second round. It was mixed news for the district’s finances: Voters across the multi-county jurisdiction approved two construction bonds, worth $380 million, to cover renovations and new facilities. However, those same voters narrowly rejected (50.8% to 49.2%) a phased-in tax increase that would have allowed the college to turn many of its adjunct lecturers into full-time staff. ACC Board president Jeffrey Richard said, “We have a strong track record of good financial stewardship, and we will do everything we can with the funding that’s available.”
