Stoner rock isn’t just a sludgy variation on heavy metal. House band at the Armadillo World Headquarters in the Seventies, Greezy Wheels thus crafts South Austin stoner rock. This Greezy edition continues to star originators Cleve and Sweet Mary Hattersley leading three members of the New Bohemians – bassist/saxophonist Brad Houser, drummer John Bush, and keyboard and trombone player Matt Hubbard – as one and all pump out steady, funky, potent grooves that are hard to resist. Two live cuts demonstrate what these tokers are capable of, hypnotic jam “Dr. Wayout” referencing their friend Roky Erickson in fearless fashion. The off-kilter jazz of “Don’t Let Nobody Drive Your Car” and old-timey blues on “And Still I’m Out of Touch” are two sides of the same silver dollar, swaggering yet just unusual enough to warrant repeat listens.
