Qui With David Yow

Emo’s, Saturday, March 17

By Saturday at 1am, any musical act you see will be clouded by chemical or alcoholic factors. So it was nice that Qui spent no time catching up. The Los Angeles trio is Paul Christensen on drums, Matt Cronk on guitar, and David Yow, who joined the band last year, doing what he does best. If you’re a Scratch Acid or Jesus Lizard fan, Qui sounds like a grungier sampling of both, with a little psychedelic stoner rock thrown in. Yow paced the stage and yelped while looking tired and a bit annoyed that Turbonegro left the inside room half empty. Still, Christensen and Cronk kept a thunderous pace, recalling drum-and-bassers Big Business, both adding some vocal under Yow’s maddened growl. Qui has an album dropping soon, and, chemically enhanced or not, it’ll make a great gift.
