Austin’s food community may like to keep it local, but we are still a part of the world community. This week, two events are raising money to bring humanitarian aid to Nepal after the devastating April earthquake.
This Saturday Lisa Rawlinson of popular local blog Full and Content is bringing back Austin Bakes. Proceeds from the citywide bake sale will be donated to disaster relief and global health nonprofit AmeriCares, who are already on the ground. Buy up all the delicious treats at one of nine locations sprinkled throughout the city – Whole Foods Market Downtown (525 N. Lamar), Stiles Switch BBQ & Brew (6610 N. Lamar), Whole Foods Market Gateway (9607 Research), Whole Foods Market Arbor Trails (4301 W. William Cannon), Crema Bakery & Cafe (9001 Brodie Ln., Ste. B3), Whip In (1950 S. I-35), Micklethwait Craft Meats (1309 Rosewood), Springdale Farm (755 Springdale), Whole Foods Market Bee Cave (2601 Hill Country Blvd.) If you are not in town, no excuses, you can still make a donation here. Later in the week, Tarka Indian Kitchen will hold a fundraiser for Nepal earthquake relief by donating 20% of sales at all four locations in Austin, Round Rock, and San Antonio on May 26-28. Tarka co-founder Rajina Pradhan is Nepali with much of her family living in the Kathmandu area. “My parents and their home were spared the devastation, but I know of many who were not so fortunate,” she said. Pradhan and her business partners hope to raise $10,000 or more to help victims of the earthquake through a donation to Mercy Corps, an organization with teams on the ground aiding recovery efforts in Nepal.
