Maybe all parents know this the moment their child is born, or maybe you need me to inform you, but the freakin’ Easter Bunny’s at the mall right now. As we speak – or as you read, TBH – he’s sat on a wicker throne aside kiddos in their Sunday best getting photos snapped that elderly relatives will just love. The youth may enjoy the experience, too, as this bespectacled bun’s a handsome fellow with soft fur and a winsome smile. Stop by any time between mall open to close and capture the Easter spirit. Looking to branch out in your live performance viewing? Leaf it to the Vortex Theatre – purveyors of “urgent, unashamed art to create action in a shifting age” – to provide a production unlike any other. Planted by producing Artistic Director Bonnie Cullum with music direction by Anderson Dear, stagecraft meets climate science in this exploration of the human connection to trees. In keeping with the theatre’s goal to promote active praxis through performance, themes of beauty, magic, and grief are woven together by ensemble members Gabriel Maldonado, Caili Crow, Nicole Boyd, Alaithia Velez, Benjamin Cervantes, Blaise Ricin, Sigh, Pablo Munoz-Evers, Katrina Saporsantos, Tyaga Welch, Laura D’Eramo, and Logan Lasiter. Based on Cormac McCarthy’s novel, the Coen Brothers’ Best Picture winner is a thrilling cat-and-mouse chase as hit man Anton Chigurh, played by a deeply chilling Javier Bardem, follows Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) after he steals a briefcase from a drug deal gone wrong. The cat is also being chased, as Sheriff Bell (Tommy Lee Jones) pursues the hired gun.
